Long-term memory is said to store knowledge that enables us to recall events, solve problems, recognize patterns, and to think; the knowledge that allows for human cognitive abilities is stored in LTM. Information appears to be arranged in LTM in an orderly way; one fact is connected to another in a nonrandom manner. It has been proposed that two LTMs be distinguished: semantic and episodic, which differ in the kinds of information stored. Semantic memory may hold the information needed to use language, such as words, symbols, with meanings and referents, and rules for manipulating them. For example, the rules of English grammar, chemical formulas, rules for adding and multiplying, knowing that autumn follows summer, just facts that do not depend on a time or place.
