sus realizes that even after his crucifixion and subsequent resurrection there will be many disbelievers. Jesus aready witnessed how his disciples' struggle to comprehend his teachings had led some to make wrong assumptions about the kingdom of God. These wrong assumptions do not bother Jesus because he knows that his departure will activate the enlightening function of the Spirit: "the Spirit causes Jesus Christ to be known and confessed as the Father's ambassador and as Lord" (Congar 28). According to Jesus, the gift of understanding, the Holy Spirit, will benefit only those who are sincere in their efforts to understand Christ's teachings: "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing" (John 6: 63).

In the seventh chapter of John, Jesus teaches in the temple during the feast of tabernacles and provides more explicit information about the Spirit's effect on believers. Jesus exhorts his followers to come to him to quench their thirst, for in him are living waters. But this wellspring also will inhabit the bodies of believers: "
