gs, its dramatically constructed series of five foliage-laden tiers, stairs and two entrances and the brightly colored pyramid give the building a jewel-box appearance in comparison to its neighbors.

When approaching from the north the entrance is relatively restrained and the building is far less dramatic, except for the tower, which is partly visible at almost any distance. In both the north and northeast approaches the Library addition does not appear to the casual eye to be connected to the Goodhue building. From the northeast one sees the tower more than a block away, over what appears to be an intervening building. At first the east end of the addition, especially because it is on a steep grade which is exaggerated by different heights in various sections of the fatade, appears to be several buildings rather than one.
