Narrative research is often used in educational studies. In this regard, McLean (1994) described a narrative research project at Arizona State University West which had the objective of generating a collection of narratives to be used in professional teacher education. A subsidiary purpose of the project was to examine ways narratives and narrative research techniques could be used with students. The idea here was that student teachers could read these narratives and use them to gain a greater understanding of what they might expect to encounter once they actually begin their teaching careers.

The strengths of McLean's (1994) evaluation of this project is that she examines and analyzes several problematic elements that arose during the research. For example, McLean points out that the simple preparation of the narratives presented the project developers with a number of ethical problems.
