Thomas Cook helped create the "tour-ist" which evolved into today's thriving industry. This came about during an era when the primary goals of ravel changed from war and trade to education and pleasure. Travel became cheaper and safer so that tourists replaced travelers in the lexicon. Tourists placed themselves in the hands of other who provided transportation, lodging, and local color, and since much of this was choreographed, surprise and adventure became less a part of the experience (O'Gara and Colhoun 54).
