Eleutherodactylus Johnstonei (Leptodactylidae)

numbers of calling males was highest in JulyAugust. In addition, the prevalence females with eggs was highest in JulyAugust. Breeding apparently stopped during the winter. Between December and March, males' calling behaviors ceased. This may have been the result of low temperatures. Calling began anew though the following April on nights with heavy rain. One difference observed between the two locations was that male calling persisted about a month longer at the Bellairs site (3:427).

In addition to its tables, Ovaska (1991) also contains 4 figures. The first describes the monthly soil moisture for the different experimental sites. This was highest for the ground beneath the Bellairs site's bromeliads. On a nightly basis, such factors as temperature and humidity were found to profoundly affect E. johnstonei's activity levels. Figure 2 shows the numbers of living frogs at each site. Although adult frog populations remained relatively constant, the numbers of juveniles fluctuated according to season. In addition, figure 3 describes the distributions of the various frog sizes found at the Bellairs and Greenwich experimental sites. Both male and female frogs at the Bellairs site were significantly larger than at the Greenwich site. Finally, patterns of frog growth are illustrated by figure 4. In juveniles, growth occurred rapidly during the wet season, but more slowly in winter. Moreover, upon reaching sexual maturity, the frogs' growth rate slowed (3:428).

Differences in male reproductive behavior and frog size between the Bellairs and Greenwich sites are thought to be due to differences in the numbers of retreat sites. Both the quantity and the quality of these sites can greatly influence frog population dynamics. The flower beds of the Bellairs site provided the amphibians with considerable protection during the day. Such convenient retreats probably increased the length of time that the frogs cou...
