In this book she examines how the press covered four noted sex crimes--the Rideout marital rape trial in Oregon; the Big Dan's pool table gang rape in New Bedford, Massachusetts; the "Preppy Murder" in New York; and the Central Park jogger rape. She also reviews the handling of the William Kennedy Smith rape case in brief. As her title might suggest Ms. Bennett is concerned about the language biases of the press, the gender biases of our language, and the traditionalist values in our society that still haunt and hurt women. Myths and stereotypes abound in the press coverage of rape. Misinformation abounds, and the unfortunate view that women provoke violence is one error in particular often taints supposedly objective journalism.
