Further, as will be seen in the literature review presented in the next section of the paper, there are now theories which postulate, at least to some extent, etiologic frameworks based on gender (sex hormone) differences.

The purpose of this literature review is to specifically examine studies of schizophrenia in adult women. In this regard, the existing literature can be divided into three broad categories: (1) literature associated with gender differences and etiologic implications; (2) literature on gender differences in the quality of life of adult male and female schizophrenics; and (3) literature on special treatment strategies for adult women with schizophrenia. Each of these categories of research is discussed below.
