She grows paranoid as she thinks she notices her husband and sister inlaw have become aware of something in the wallpaper, too, and she catches them looking at it and touching it when they think she is not looking.

The narrator sees the woman from behind the wallpaper creeping around the grounds of the mansion by day, and at night she sees the strangled heads of many women trapped behind bars in the wallpaper (Gilman). As they are leaving for home in a couple of days, the narrator gets up at night and peels off the wallpaper as high as she can reach, and strips half the room.
