Employment Laws at State and Federal Levels

There are several differences in state and federal systems of government in regard to employment laws. For instance, with the minimum wage law, the federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour under provisions contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) (Federal, 2005). Non-exempt employees paid on an hourly basis must receive at least the federal minimum wage for every hour worked. When non-exempt employees paid in other ways such as salaries, commissions or on a piece-rate basis, must be paid the equivalent of at least the federal minimum wage when dividdd by the total hours worked in a workweek.
