Thus, children who experience consistent and sensitive responses from their caregivers during times of distress usually develop secure relationships with their caregivers while children who experience inconsistent, inappropriate, or mistimed responses from caregivers during such times are more likely to develop insecure attachments that will affect family relationships and, as a result, the childÆs personal and social development (Lynch, 2002, p. 519).

In addition, a childÆs home provides a context where learning and socialization take place. Consequently, the quality and characteristics of the home environment have an important impact on the childÆs development. In particular, a stimulating home environment with opportunities for learning and exploration and that provides warmth and emotional support will foster healthy growth and development of children (Carlson & Corcoran, 2001, 779).
