In terms of methods for determining whether students meet the foregoing criteria, multiple assessments will be made. The first will consist of informal assessments. The benefits of informal assessment in ESL instruction have been discussed by Short (1993) who notes that these assessment strategies are able to measure many of the elements of language that are simply not covered by formal tests.
