ussians who would have preferred to join France in partitioning the Ottoman Empire rather than join Britain in defending it. The fact of Russia's alliance with the Ottomans, however brief, is perhaps an indication of Russian leaders' own fear of the ideas of liberty and freedom of the French Revolution and their desire to keep those ideas out of Russian minds.

France was defeated by a British Expeditionary Force (later itself defeated by Ottoman forces). This removed France from involvement in an area it was not very interested in and left Britain there instead. Britain remained involved in Egyptian affairs until after World War I (340). As for the rest of the Middle East, France was more victorious than first believed, and in an unexpected way.

Then, after France's decisive victory at Austerlitz and acquisition of Austrian lands, Napoleon could once again factor the Ottoman Empire into his plans. Mostly, these plans involved using them as a buffer, and if Iran were included this buffer would extend to Transcaucasus. His emissary
