The history of Europe

on to his model presidency, he is the closest the nation has to an untarnishable hero. To this day, Washington's presidency is the model for all other U. S. Presidents. Washington quit after two terms because he wanted to avoid the appearance of a monarchy. He refused to delegate responsibilities to the vice president because he did not like John Adams. Whatever his personal reasons for what he did, he has nonetheless been imitated by all successive presidents (108114).

Jefferson was probably the next most responsible for the development of the United States, as he was the one who decided on the Louisiana Purchase (122). Jefferson had two reasons for this purchase. First, he wanted to add land to the nation to satisfy the expansionism of its people. Americans were first colonists who came here to settle new lands. Second, Jefferson wanted to remove foreign (European) elements from U. S. borders. Though many people lump the United States in with Europe nowadays, at that time Europe was something Americans were trying to get away from.
