To be elected in America can be a humbling experience (as President Clinton would surely agree). In such a democracy, the majority has a periodic opportunity to take power back from the hands to which it has been entrusted. This opportunity also protects constituents from abuses against the system (Tocqueville 205). While it is the fundamental responsibility of the individual to participate, it is the collective will of the people that both prevails and regulates those who would seek the reigns of power. Thus, campaigning for voter support tends to humanize leaders.
