Though the angel was sent to answer Zacharias' prayer, Gabriel was also building up Zecharias' faith by showing him the power of God was not confined to only what Zacharias thought possible. The angel's appearance was not an accident, nor was it delayed somehow as if God was only now able to to get around to Zacharias. The child Gabriel was announcing to Zacharias was to have a life intricately connected with the Messiah Himself. Paul described the Messiah's timing as "in the fulness" (Galatians 4:4), meaning that, when everything else that needed to happen first had happened, then this happened.
