ome, non-white population. School statistics show an enrollment rate of 75 percent Native Americans; 5 percent African-Americans; 10 percent Hispanics; and 10 percent Caucasians.

Subject selection procedures will begin by examining all fifth grade students school records for their CTBS scores. Based on this examination, two numbered lists will be prepared:

(1) a numbered list of all male fifth graders identified by their CTBS scores as average achievers; and

(2) a numbered list of all female fifth graders identified by their CTBS scores as average achievers. The names on each list will be numbered. (It should be noted that fifth graders whose achievement levels are below or above average will not be included in the study in order to control for response variance due not to differences in instructional strategy but rather to differences in initial reading ability level).

From each list, thirty-two students will be randomly selected resulting in a total sample size of 64 fifth grade students, thirty-two of which are male and thirty-two of which are female.
