The increase per capita of television sets, and the development of home entertainment systems and the internet have provided many forms of entertainment which can take place in the home, decreasing the need to go out and engage with others for social activities.

With the entry into the work force of many women, and the resulting increase in the number of two-income families, less time is available for socializing and attending civic groups and functions which are not work-related (Putnam 277-284). Mothers have to juggle work and childcare, as well as taking care of the home, so have little free time for such matters. With each successive generation, there are more things competing for an individualÆs time, and civic affairs have fallen way down the list of priorities for most people.
