Some researchers argue that SMEs have the advantage of flexibility and are able to internalize market information to the same degree or better than large firms. However, SMEs also face certain disadvantages which may discourage them from pursuing international opportunities. Obviously, a major impediment to SME expansion, in comparison to large firms, is lack of resources. Christos Kalantaridis writing in Journal of Small Business Management notes that financial resources available to small firms are a constraint in developing an international orientation. This constraint can take two forms: (1) Lack of finance may hinder the companyÆs ability to identify opportunities; while (2) inadequate financial resources may restrict the exploitation of opportunities that have been identified.
