he People.ö Article 19 confers equal rights on all citizens of Iran. Article 21 compels the government to ensure the rights of women, in conformity with Islamic law. Article 24 grants freedom of expression for the media, but with two exceptions that could render the freedom almost meaningless. ôPublications and the press have freedom of expression except when it is detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam or the rights of the public.ö

Similarly, Article 26 grants individuals the right to form political and professional associations, provided they do not ôviolate the principles of the Islamic Republic,ö among other things. Article 27 allows marches and demonstrations so long as they are ônot detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam.ö Article 28 allows individuals to pick any occupation, provided ôit is not contrary to Islam.ö
