This listening style was used by one prominent therapist to cure a schizophrenic patient without the use of medications (Dorman, ôDante's Cure,ö 2004). The therapist, Dr. Daniel Dorman, used listening in place of medications because he believed that, ôDrug therapy is not treatmentùit's management. Telling a schizophrenic, or even a depressed or anxious person that he has a brain disorder and that he must be on drugs is telling him that he is a hopeless case.ö (Dorman, ôDante's Cure: A Journeyà,ö 2004). Putting aside the question of whether medication or necessary or useful for treatment of schizophrenia, it can be assessed from Dr. Dorman's comment that in treating his patients he begins from a mindset that listening can be used as an effective therapy for even a condition as serious as schizophrenia.
