An important boost to HFHI came in 1984 when Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter launched the first Jimmy Carter Work Project (JCWP), which mobilized money and volunteers to build houses in New York City (ôHabitatàHistoryö). Future JCWP's followed and even inspired similar projects in other countries, such as the Kenneth D. Kaunda Work Project (KKWP) in Zambia (ôHabitatàZambiaö). Similarly, over the past thirty years, many projects have developed to bring in a variety of population sectors and organizations to contribute to HFHI's projects. The following are descriptions of some of the opportunities that different groups have to get involved with HFHI's home-building efforts:

The Houses That Congress Built. This is an effort by members of Congress to become involved in building Habitat for Humanity homes in their respective districts (ôHabitatàLos Angelesö). Congress members pair up with affiliates, local Habitat for Humanity organizations, to help build houses in their communities. This involves government officials directly in the affairs of their constituents and in turn provides positive press for these officials.
