Egalitarianism Versus Personal Excellence

Are we all superheroes in disguise, each possessing special powers, or are we best viewed as mere mortals who are equal at the core? Which is the favorable way to see humans and which trait should we encourage: being special or being normal? Both have advantages. If we view each human as being special with a unique gift to share, we can best harness each person's potential to do good works and contribute to society. If we view everyone as equals, we assure that all are treated with equal respect and dignity and that no one feels lesser than his or her peers. Which is best for proper psychological development? Which view is best for society as a whole? Both the movie The Incredibles (2004) and Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s short story Harrison Bergeron (1961) point out the dangers of downplaying the superhero that exists within each person and celebrate the power of individuality. In education, this theme has come into focus as a debate on whether or not a competitive atmosphere should be favored in schools.

The Incredibles makes a strong case for honoring each person's unique gifts by acknowledging those gifts and encouraging the individual to develop them. Living under a ôSuperhero's Protection Program,ö Mr. and Mrs. Incredible and their two children lead ônormalö lives, hiding their superhero powers from suburban neighbors and classmates. Though this allows them to fit in and keeps others from feeling threatened by their superpowers, it causes tensions in their lives. The father, Mr. Incredible, has become portly and bored in his mundane office job and seeks excitement by sneaking out at night to surreptitiously save people from ill fates. His son Dash is frustrated in school because he's not allowed to exercise his super running ability in competitive sports.
