To be optimally effective, however, ambulatory surgical centers require the use an effective preadmissions testing procedure (Driscoll, 1986). This preadmission testing facilitates the efficient use of resources, promotes cost effectiveness, assesses the suitability of patients for outpatient surgery, and enhances postsurgical recovery (Kitz, Robinson, Schiavone, Walsh, & Conahan, 1988; Stein, 1986; Worley, 1986; Burn, 1979).
