The South

There are a number of things I like and dislike about the American South. Of these, the thing I dislike the most is the past of the Southern states, which includes the embarrassing and inhumane institution of slavery, secession, and instigation of the U.S. Civil War. As one historian argues, ôAlthough slavery was legal in many northern states before the advent of the æfree statesÆ leading to the American Civil War, the huge, slave-run plantations were only found in the Deep Southö (U.S., 2005, 2). While the institution of slavery has been outlawed in the U.S. for nearly a century and a half, the impact it had on race relations in the U.S. was enormous. Racism and prejudice continued to be associated with the South into well into the middle of the 20th century. Such a past has made improvements in race relations more difficult to achieve in the U.S., hampering efforts in Congress to help promote equality for all citizens regardless of race, color, or ethnicity.

Despite this past, there are many things the South offers that I like in contemporary times. The South has plenty to offer that adds to the quality of life. Among these offerings are a unique and diverse cuisine, numerous parks and waterways, tropical climate, and a number of historical landmarks. The Southern states have also attempted to distance themselves from their historically prejudiced customs and manners. As one historian asserts, ôIn some areas affluent suburbs are now largely racially integrated, and a small but increasing number of churches as wellö (U.S., 2005, 5). Southern states also offer some of the most beautiful landscapes, waterways, and entertainment America has to offer. One of these is Florida which is home to Epcot Center, Disney World, Seaworld, and numerous other entertainments. Tropical climate, sunny beaches and ocean fronts, and unique customs and styles are also part and parcel of many Southern states.
