This answer will compare and contrast the ôNew Dealö of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the ôGreat Societyö of Lyndon Johnson. These are considered the two major reforms of American Society since the Depression. Both of these terms refer to a broad range of legislation that was designed to solve many real and perceived problems of America. Roosevelt came to power over President Hoover who had been in office when the Depression happened.

Roosevelt promised a "New Deal" and in his first 100 days in office, enacted many programs that helped the poor, the sick, and the economy. Some critics claim that this was the beginning of the Imperial Presidency, but others see his legislation as generally helpful.
