According to a survey by the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the average high school counselor ôspends about half his or her time providing college counseling services to studentsö (Counseling, 2004, p. 15). Other time is spent working with at risk children, those with special needs, advocating for students, and developing job search skills like resume writing and interviewing. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, of the 526,000 counselors in America, 228,000 are educational, vocational, and school counselorsö (Counselors, 2004, p. 4). The high school counselor earns an average of $44,100 annually, with a low end of $24,930 and a high end of $70,320 (Counselors, 2004, p. 9). Career credentials typically require a masterÆs degree in counseling with two years of supervised clinical practice of 3,000 hours, and all States in the U.S. require school counselors to hold a State school counseling certificate (Counselors, 2004, p. 1). Due to privacy needs, counselors typically work in their own offices with a work schedule that is primarily 9-10 months in length, with 2-3 months vacation (Counselors, 2004). Counselors typically work five days a week, the same hours as school teachers. Large schools are more likely to have high student-to-counselor ratios than small schools.
