In both stories, we see that masculinity is closely associated with deception, capitalism, and sexual prowess. Greenbaum (p. 35) tells us that the salesmen in Glengarry Glen Ross ôdefine themselves by capitalism and competition.ö Whenever any of the salesmen are perceived as weak or ineffectual at their job, they are considered effeminate, castrated, or homosexual by the others. To be a great salesman, one must ôhave the ballsö it takes to screw other people over, (Greenbaum, p. 34). In ôGood Country People,ö even the name of the male salesman is rife with sexual imagery, Manley Pointer. Because of his deceptive language and her own self-inflated intellect, Joy-Hulga believes she will be the one who will seduce Manley Pointer. However, Manley abandons her at the end of the story, taking away her artificial leg and her artificial notions of her own independent and superior images of self.
