Estate General, believed that they had a far better understanding of the ideals of the Enlightenment than did either the masses of poor or the nobility. During the years between 1785 and 1789, aristocratic resistance to the laws and actions promulgated by the Third Estate resulted in the radicalization of many members of the bourgeoisie.

The Rights of Man was a declaration made by the National Assembly of France, August 26, 1789 in which they set out the natural, unalienable and sacred rights of people to serve as the foundation of legislative and executive action and law. It stated that men are born free and equal, with rights to liberty, property, security and resistance to oppression. The Declaration of the Rights of Man ôàdeclared property to be a natural right, along with liberty, security, and æresistance to oppression.Æ It declared freedom of speech, religious toleration, and liberty of the press inviolableö (French, p. 640).
