ex McCandless as a young man who had no faith and put no stock in the integrity of the U.S. government. Krakauer believes McCandlessÆ revulsion by social values and mores drove him to seek his own definition of existence in a place unsullied by contemporary human values and exploitation. We see that McCandless lost no love when it came to his relationship with the U.S. government. When an individual asks McCandless, intent on hunting for his supper, if he has a hunting license, the young man replies: ôHell noàHow I feed myself is none of the governmentÆs business. Fuck their stupid rules,ö (Krakauer, 6).

In Huck Finn, though his words are less graphic, they are just as harsh with respect to him finding other peopleÆs values stupid and his own oneÆs that are nobody elseÆs business. Huck goes through enormous emotional distress in trying to decide if he should tell the truth about Jim.
