Krakauer believes McCandlessÆ revulsion by social values and mores drove him to seek his own definition of existence in a place unsullied by contemporary human values and exploitation. We see that McCandless lost no love when it came to his relationship with the U.S. government. When an individual asks McCandless, intent on hunting for his supper, if he has a hunting license, the young man replies: ôHell noàHow I feed myself is none of the governmentÆs business.
