The narrator feels extremely confined and is completely bored, when she takes it upon herself to begin examining the wallpaper pattern in her bedroom. With little else to occupy her mind, she becomes obsessively attached to the wallpaper, thinking about it constantly. For the narrator, the wallpaper is a refuge to which she can escape, one that is all her own and is not within the control of men. She escapes to this obsession as a virtual prisoner of patriarchy.
