Oedipus and Hamlet

. Tiresias attempts to inform Oedipus he is the source of Thebes woes, the culprit he seeks, but Oedipus chastises Tiresias and insists he is working in league with Creon to subvert his role as King. As Tiresias tells Oedipus, ôIt is not Creon who harms you û you harm yourselfö (Sophocles 23). In contrast to OedipusÆ hell-bent determination to expose the murderer of Laius, Hamlet is ambivalent about avenging his fatherÆs death. Eventually, however, Hamlet becomes determined that vengeance is his fate. As he tells Horatio, ôNot a whit, we defy augury. There is special providence in the fall of a sparrowàThe readiness is allö (Shakespeare V.ii.197-98; 200).
