In such shows families were portrayed as well-off, happy and able to enjoy a high quality daily lifestyle. Coontz argues such is not the case with more women suffering from anxiety and depression in the era and poverty was ômore widespread than in the worst of our last three recessionsö (49). Fewer women worked outside of the home in the 1950s and few men took an active role in caring for the home and children.
Today, families are much better off according to Coontz. More women are working and women and men now share a more equal responsibility at work and at home.
