Condom Dissemination in High School

Teens today live in a world that is much different than the society inhabited by their grandparents. Changes in family values, greater access and portrayal of sexual imagery, and other factors have challenged todayÆs teenagers with even greater pressure for sexual experimentation. As Kmietowicz (1354) maintains, ôThe move away from traditional family values points to a socio-sexual transformation where sexual imagery permeates all aspects of life and teenagers are under greater pressure to experiment with sex.ö If statistics are to be believed, that is exactly what many teens in the U.S. and U.K. are doing. Unfortunately, many of them fail to engage in safe sex using some form of birth control such as the pill or condoms. According to the British Medical Journal, the U.S. and U.K. have the highest teen pregnancy rates in the world, ô52 out of every 1000 girls aged between 15 and 19 in the U.S. have birth, while the U.K. topped the list in Europe with just over 30 births in 1000 teenagersö (Kmietowicz 1354). For these and a variety of other reasons, teenagers must be provided with comprehensive sex education programs in high school that include the availability of condoms.
