1919 Prohibition begins. This period of prohibition was responsible for intense debates between prohibitionists and those opposed to them, culminating in bootlegging and enormous violence in many areas like Chicago.

1921 ôFattyö Arbuckle scandal. Arbuckle was accused of participating in a drunken orgy in which a young starlet was killed. It represented one of the first major celebrity scandals, something American culture remains fascinated by to this day.

1924 J. Edgar Hoover is appointed the Director of the FBI. HooverÆs long reign of power via the FBI made him at times more powerful than sitting U.S. presidents, particularly during the McCarthy era and the Civil Rights period of the 1960s.

1923 Teapot Dome Scandal. This scandal involving President Harding represented one of the biggest and most public scandals involving a sitting president in the history of the United States.

1925 Babe Ruth makes home-run record. RuthÆs record would last nearly four decades and his prowess on the field helped solidify the sport of baseball as AmericaÆs favorite national pastime.

1928 First Mickey Mouse cartoon. Few Americans since the time this cartoon was released have failed to include Disney animations and films as one of the biggest influences of their childhood years. They continue to share them with their children.
