Cyrano appreciates RoxanneÆs beauty, but he also admires her wit, charm and sophistication. These qualities are exactly the ones that Christian does not possess, but ChristianÆs good looks make him appealing to Roxanne and she believes his romantic sentiments are his own and not those of Cyrano. Cyrano also posses wit, charm and sophistication. His chief goal in like is ôTo make myself admirable in all things,ö but because of his insecurities over his appearance he does not think a beautiful woman will ever look upon him with admiration in the conventional sense (Rostand, p. 40). While Cyrano is admirable in all the things he attempts, his vanity makes him unable to accept himself because of what he finds a detestable appearance. It gives him no confidence a beautiful woman like Roxanne could ever find him desirable, despite her appreciation for profound intellect which he does possess.

Part of CyranoÆs insecurity stems not from his own weakness but from the cruel treatment he often receives at the hands of others due to his appearance. When he fights one who made such remarks, Roxanne comes to thank him for his bravery and honor. She explains to Cyrano that she was relieved for his bravery and valor because she would have been forced to marry the offensive man.
