While the mining, cattle and lumber frontiers offered some quick, easy riches before being transformed into capital-intensive businesses, the farming frontier was to develop more slowly.

The expansion of the railroads was instrumental in this economic development as well, making it economically viable for farmers in the West to bring their crops to market in the more heavily populated regions of the Midwest and East. In sum, the effects of the industrial revolution upon the settlement and development of the American Western frontier cannot be overestimated. The nineteenth century was a time of rapid expansion and dramatic changes in American society - changes which had a direct impact upon the relationships between the North and the South.
