The Arab world is largely characterized by the struggle between traditionalists and modernists. The traditionalists of the Arab world oppose reform. Most Muslims in the Arab world are Sunni Muslims, believing that the first four Caliphs are MuhammadÆs legal successors. Ever since the defeat of Arab forces in the Arab-Israeli war, Western models of society that were secularist and aimed at modernism have been rejected by the Arab world.
