Despite the stoic and harsh nature of running Coorain, ConwayÆs ability to survive many difficult times stemmed from the bush ethos and ideals involved in outback settlement life. Work had consumed the lives of her father and mother and through work Conway learns to find what small compensation and fulfillment she has in Australia. As Hoy (2000) argues, ôAlways she would be able to put aside personal concerns in the interest of work that would bring its own joy and satisfaction. She would find work simultaneously compensating and fulfillingö (451).

Education becomes a savior in the midst of the intellectual as well as physical drought in Coorain. When young, Conway learns many lessons from listening to the tutors who teach her brothers. Conway discovers a passion for reading and through literature she gains more education as well as insight into her self and others. She finds through education that a primarily British perspective on history
