Chief Plenty Coups of the Crows

oups was instrumental in efforts to bring about peace among the tribal nations. He understood that the white man was a force that could not be overcome. When it was apparent that the white man would repel any efforts by the tribes to retain their traditional lands and lifestyle, Chief Plenty Coups made a speech seeking peace among the great tribes of the United States. In that speech he proposed one last great council where all chiefs could eat, smoke, and say farewell. As he stated in this speech, ôThe white manÆs medicine is stronger than ours; his iron horse rushes over the buffalo trail. He talks to use through his æwhispering spirit.Æ We are like birds, with a broken wing. My heart is cold within me. My eyes are growing dim. I am oldö (Coups 1).
