LOGOTHERAPY

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Logotherapy is a unique existentialistic therapy of meaning that was developed by psychiatrist, author and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl. In experiencing the horrors of the holocaust Frankl discerned a difference between those who survived and those who did not. After three years in concentration camps in Auschwitz and Dachau, Frankl explained his observation as follows: ôOther things being equal, those apt to survive the camps were those oriented toward the future û toward a task, or a person, waiting for them in the future, toward a meaning to be fulfilled by them in the futureö (Viktor 2003, 1-2).

Largely stemming from work based on such experiences and observations, Frankl developed Logotherapy or ôtherapy through meaningö (Viktor 2003, 1). PERSONAL THEORY Abstract The following is a presentation of my personal theory of human development, mental health and wellbeing. In the introduction I explain some of my underlying beliefs about human development and learning, including an explanation of why I find transcendentalism useful in my approach. In the body I discuss the different ideas, concepts, techniques and approaches I have adopted from Christianity, Sigmund Freud and Carl Rogers to create my own workable personal theory. I present the core value of Christianity that I feel aligns with my transcendental values and the values posited by Rogers in person-centered therapy. I also explore why FreudÆs belief that there is a balanced innate place of wellbeing to return to through psychoanalysis fits in with my other views of human growth and development. In the conclusion I discuss why I believe my personal theory is valid and will prove effective when applied in the therapeutic setting. Introduction My therapeutic framework and worldview encompass concepts, ideas and techniques in the theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Rogers. In addition to the psychoanalytic concepts of Freud and t
