South of the front along the Rockies, a winter cold front often pushes south and east until it becomes stationary near the land-sea interface along the Gulf and east coasts of the United States. Cyclones often develop along this front also, and then travel to the north or northeast. Many of these develop over the Gulf of Mexico, many others just east of Cape Hatteras in North Carolina, and sweep north, on a track vaguely parallel to the east coast.

Because a cyclone in the northern hemisphere always spins counterclockwise because of the Coriolis effect (those in the southern hemisphere spin clockwise, and are usually called anticyclones), the northern, leading edge of the cyclone sweeps in an arc westward and then southward. This is why such storm are called ônorÆeastersö in New England: the winds are generally from the northeast at the beginning of the storm, opposing the generally eastward flow of the prevailing winds.
