Domino transformed the Notes Release 4.0 server into an interactive Web applications server. This server combined the open networking environment of Internet standards and protocols with the powerful application development facilities of Notes. Domino provided businesses and organizations with the ability to rapidly develop a broad range of business solutions for the Internet and for intranets. The Domino server made the ability to publish Notes documents to the Web a dynamic process (ôThe History of Notes and Dominoö).

Release 4.5 offered many improvements over previous versions, including messaging, an Internet server, multi-database full-text searching, Personal Web Navigator, scalability, manageability, Domino server clusters, new database management tools, security features such as Execution Control Lists, programmability and script libraries, seamless Web access from the Notes client, and enhanced application development capability with support for Java 1.1 (ôThe History of Notes and Dominoö). The screen shot below shows the Release 4.5 screen opened to the calendar application, with a toolbar and menu bar visible in the Lotus Notes window behind.

By October 2002, when Notes 6 and Domino 6, were released, the Welcome Page had changed considerably and boasted a number of new features, such as Welcome Page action buttons, a preview pane, a customization wizard for personalizing the Welcome Page, the Launch Pad for quick access to applications, and the Quick Notes interface that allowed users to create mail, reminders, and other applications without having to open the respective databases (ôThe History of Notes and Dominoö).
