Hong Kong & U.S. Standards of Beauty

Hong Kong Versus U.S. Beauty Culture

There are differences between the Hong Kong standard of beauty and the U.S. standard of beauty. When the China Daily Website asked people to choose the most beautiful of three well-known Chinese womenùZhang Ziyi, Maggie Cheung, and Lu YanùWesterners chose a different woman than Chinese did. Lu Yan is a Chinese model who is well-known and very popular in Paris, but ôsheÆs only considered so-so in Chinaö (ôEnigmas of Chinese Beauty Come to Puzzle Manyö). Lu Yan is probably popular in the West because Westerners think she looks the way Chinese look (ôEnigmas of Chinese Beauty Come to Puzzle Manyö).

On the other hand, a 30-year-old American man who was interviewed chose Zhang Ziyi as the most beautiful woman; he agreed that her beauty was more like ôthe American ideal of beautyö (ôEnigmas of Chinese Beauty Come to Puzzle Manyö). When China Daily Website asked Peng Bo, the president of Shanghai Time Cosmetic Surgery Hospital, whether Zhang was beautiful, he answered, ôI would only say her face is up to the standard of beauty. Zhang's job requires that she has to be assertive," (ôEnigmas of Chinese Beauty Come to Puzzle Manyö).

What he said brings up another side to Chinese beautyùpersonality. Many Chinese feel that personality is part of beauty, just like the way a woman looks is. Hong Kong women are more quiet and agreeable than American women (ôEnigmas of Chinese Beauty Come to Puzzle Manyö). American women are more outgoing and assertive. Everyone can agree that Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Cheung, and Lu Yan are beautiful women, but which one is the most beautiful? It depends on the person you ask.
