Afrocentrism argues that Africans have been marginalized in social, political, philosophical and economic terms for the past five hundred years by the dominant Eurocentric perspective and it is now necessary for Africans to examine all data as active subjects rather than objects in a European frame (Asante). Proponents of the perspective argue that such marginalization has caused Black people to become "decentered," which means that they have lost their cultural footing and become something other than their cultural and political origins would dictate (Asante).

Asante argues that Black people have, in fact, become "insane" because they are living an absurdity. Moreover, they have themselves participated in an anti-African racism that has ignored and denigrated their classical heritage and contributions to world knowledge (Asante).
