ake it possible for students of all ages to use the Internet effectively to learn. In addition to using the Internet as a reference tool, students are also using the Internet to interact with their teachers and to complete their lessons on-line. This trend started within the business community, where companies used the Internet to train employees around the world using standardized training programs. Computer-based training used the power of computers and the standardization made possible with computers to overcome many of the problems that are inherent in instructor-led training (ILT).

Since much of the training that is conducted centers around computer technology, using computers to perform the training made sense. Even when instructors led classes, the 1980s saw a large expansion in the use of computers to enhance the training experience. Students were led through programs that they would actually be using with data that was appropriate to their environment. In some cases, the exercises performed in the training class resulted in data that was used in the company; in other cases, sample data was used to help build student confidence without risking company data.
