There is a critical nursing shortage in the United States which is predicted to grow worse as the baby boomers age and the number of nurses available to care for them is reduced due to an aging nursing population, reduced enrollments in nursing schools, and many nurses leaving the profession within the first five years.
B. State and sequence objectives in terms of specific resources, time lines, strategies, and responsible parties.
1. By August 1, all nursing department heads and
nursing coordinators will meet to discuss the
problem and assess the needs of each department.
2. By August 15, each department will have submitted
a statement of needs, resources, and a temporary plan of action to cover for nursing shortages. A plan will be submitted to the hospital detailing
additional nursing staff needs, and proposed
3. By August 31, the temporary plans will have been implemented, and the hospital will attempt to hire new nurses to cover for the shortages either by hiring older nurses on a part-time basis, or offering incentives to full-time nurses.
