ROLE OF THE U.S. ARMY ENGINEERS IN ARMY TRANSFORMATION

This essay reviews the role of the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the process of Army Transformation. The focus in this essay is on the role of engineers in relation to the objective force element of the process of Army Transformation. The "objective force" is explained later in this essay.

The concept and program of Army Transformation envisions the restructuring of the United States Army to meet the future security needs of the nation. Although the process of Army Transformation is occurring today, the concept and program of Army Transformation was envisioned and implemented prior to the terrorist attacks on the United States in September 2001. The motivation for Army Transformation was recognition that the structure of the force that performed well under conditions of the Cold War was not optimal for performance under conditions that likely will characterized future war.
