ll the disturbance. Two days after the shooting, the Congress of Racial Equality led a march on the precinct police station involved, where the crowd clashed with police. At the end of the day, one protester had been killed, and 19 protesters and 12 police had been wounded (National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, 1968). Over the next several days, the riot spread to other sections of New York City, during which police battled mobs, fire personnel fought fires set with Molotov cocktails, and widespread looting occurred. Dozens of persons were injured.

One week later, two days of rioting broke out in Rochester, New York. The spark was an attempt by police to arrest a drunk black youth at a street dance (National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, 1968). Calling out the National Guard was required to restore order.
