Contribution of Human Development Learning To My Career Success

At the moment I am just a student. However, I do anticipate having a family in the future and that means that I would like to work in a profession that is interesting and where I can earn as much income as possible. I feel that my human development classes have prepared me to look for particular types of jobs where I could make good money and also enjoy the work. As noted by Papalia, Olds, Feldman and Gross (2003) human development prepares students for a wide variety of work including work with children, adolescents, adults, and the aged. This means that I will no doubt have good options to choose from and can, therefore, select a job that will best fit my career interests, values and needs.

In addition, the understanding and knowledge I have gained in my human development classes can be applied, I believe, in terms of improving interpersonal relationships in most any job I chose to work. For example, my knowledge of developmental stages in as presented by Piaget (1990) and Kohlberg (see: Kuhn, Langer, Kohlberg & Hann, 1977) and Erik Erikson (see: Elkind, 1970) has helped me to better understand people at all stages of life. This understanding, in turn, helps me to be more sensitive and responsive to their needs and the ways their developmental stage may affect their perception which should lead to improved interpersonal relationships with coworkers.

I also feel that simply by learning about human development I have prepared myself for doing well in any career I may chose, even if it is not specifically in my field. My human development learning has not been isolated but rather has been applied to several diverse fields including health, education, and public welfare.
